Come try your hand at Raku, Naked Raku or Obvara. The event is open to all Guild members to fire 2-3 pieces. Participants will make their pieces on their own time, we will bisque fire them and provide glazes if you would like and help you fire them!

Available to: General members, Studio/RAM members

Included in the event

  • Instructional meeting/pdf
  • 1/2 bag of Raku Clay
  • Bisque firing of your pieces
  • A variety of Raku glazes available in the studio (arrangements can be made for General members)
  • Each participant will have 2-3 pieces fired during the workshop. Maximum size per piece 6”x6” base x 10” tall.
  • Participants are welcome to bring their own reduction chambers (e.g., lidded metal container such as a large soup pot, small garbage can, or roasting pan), however, we also have a selection available.
  • Sawdust will be provided, but participants should also bring newsprint with them.
  • Safety gloves will be provided.

Important to know

  • Studio time to make pieces is not included in this event.
  • After pieces are fired in the Raku kiln, participants are responsible for managing their pieces in a reduction chamber.
  • Participants must be present on the day to have their pieces fired.
  • The event takes place outside so make sure you come dressed to spend the whole day outside and get a bit dirty.
  • Bring your own chair, lunch, and drinks. Coffee and treats will be provided.
  • There is access to a bathroom on site.

Safety

This is a fun event but as we will be working around open fire, participants must abide by the following:

  • No loose fitting clothing
  • Wear natural fibres
  • Tie hair back or cover loose hair
  • Wear close-toed shoes: No sandals, slip-on shoes or Crocs permitted.

Key Dates

March 31st – Clay pickup at studio

  • Studio members can pick up their clay any day after this time.
  • Alternative arrangements can be made for General Members as needed.

April 25th – Bisque Firing

  • Pieces must be bone dry and ready for bisque firing. A designated shelf in the front room will be labelled RAKU where pieces can be put before and after the bisque firing.
  • If we don’t feel your piece is dry enough it will not be fired.

April 28th – Begin Glazing

  • Raku glazes and slip will be available in the studio for participants to use to glaze their pieces.
  • Studio access arrangements will be made for General Members as needed.

May 3rd – Workshop

  • Bring your glazed pieces with you
